Klezmer 1

The Song Becomes a Dance — a klezmer duet for violin and viola (A freygish, slow 4/4 song at quarter = 63, then a 2/4 dance accelerating from 104 to about 154; about four minutes). Written 2026-10-14 for Graham (viola) and a beginner violin friend, for Classical Jams Austin, in the spirit of the Jewish themes Shostakovich loved. One tune, twice: first a slow song over a chromatic lament bass, then the same notes as a dance that gets a little faster every time through — oom-pah, two fiddles in sixths, a laughing second tune, the viola taking the melody while the violin keeps the beat — to a stamping finish on B-flat, C-sharp, A. The violin stays in one hand shape (low first finger, high second on the A string), first position. Draft v1 — verdict pending.
