Engine At Sea 1

The Engine at Sea — string quartet in D minor (Cadence, for Graham, 2026-10-17). Built on the one texture Graham liked in the It's Sloppy But concert version: the cello's straight-eighth engine on the roots, the viola an octave up, the second violin's syncopated comp, the first violin free above. A new tune, sung strophe after strophe by whoever has it: first violin, then viola under a long swelling countermelody, then cello with the engine up in the viola. Then the engine stops and there is only the sea — open-string fifths with a breath on every bar, the tune at half speed far above. The engine starts again from nothing, the tune comes back in thirds, every long note gets an extra beat to breathe (5/4), everyone sings over the cello alone, and the hook is handed down violin to violin to viola to cello while the engine eases to a stop. One last turn of the engine. Rendered with sfizz + Virtual Playing Orchestra.
